Dear Cal State LA Student Body,
With the recent shift in administration at the federal level, I want to acknowledge your fears, frustrations, worries, and questions about the recent and ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids affecting our local communities in Los Angeles. Your emotions are valid. Your thoughts of “what if” are valid. Regardless of what is echoed in our national politics saying otherwise, you belong! Cal State LA is a community, family, and culture that embraces your lived experiences, background, and identities--all of which hold valuable strength and contribute to the greater campus community. Just as we emphasize our commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, your student government (ASI) will remain committed to upholding these values to ensure our DACA and undocumented students are recognized, heard, and safe at Cal State LA.
In accordance with the California State University policy, faculty and staff are not required to assist federal immigration authorities with sharing nonpublic information about students. Now more than ever, it is imperative to unite as one university in solidarity and support for our vulnerable communities as they navigate challenging times. As students, your campus is both a home and sanctuary that ensures you can achieve the goals you all strive towards. With that, I want to make a critical Call to Action: To provide students with the ability and confidence to achieve their journey in higher education, campus departments, centers, and university administration should work together on communication efforts and relay all necessary resources to support student.
ASI will continue to engage in conversation with President Eanes, the administration, and the following individuals who were named our campus response team to ensure this is an ongoing conversation that includes students’ needs.
