Public Forum: This time is allotted to members of the public to address the committee.

Action Items

  • Election of the Vice Chair: The committee will make nominations and elect a Vice Chair for the committee.
  • Appointment for Open Positions: The body will appoint candidates to the Legislative Affairs and Advocacy Committee.

New Business

  • Vision for the Semester: The committee will hone their vision for the semester and discuss methods to expand efforts throughout Cal State LA.
  • Position on CSSA Bills: The committee will review the bills California State Student Association (CSSA) introduced at their January Plenary Meeting and discuss what position they might take on these bills.
  • Campaigns for the California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS): The committee will review the two advocacy efforts shared by the CSSA Southern Civic Engagement Officer and discuss supporting one or both campaigns.
  • Capital Fellows Programs: The committee will be informed about the Capital Fellows Programs as an opportunity to participate in policymaking and development in California.
  • CSSA Plenary: The committee will be informed about opportunities to volunteer for the CSSA plenary in April at Cal State LA.
  • Lobby Corps Advocacy Clinic: The committee will be informed about the Lobby Corps Advocacy Clinic to prepare them for CHESS 2019 (March 9- 12).

This committee reviews, researches, and makes recommendations on legislation at the local and State level, through CSSA. Additionally, this body creates an annual advocacy agenda and recommends action to the BOD.

The Legislative Affairs and Advocacy Committee membership consists of the following:

  • ASI Vice President of External Affairs (Chair)
  • ASI President
  • Civic Engagement Officer
  • Diversity and Inclusion Officer
  • Vice President for University Affairs
  • Two ASI Board of Directors members
  • Three students at-large from the student body
  • ASI Executive Director or designee (non-voting)
